The crisp, mineral Chardonnays from the pilgrimage site Vézelay, located south of Chablis, were previously known only to a few connoisseurs and were considered one of the best-kept secrets in France. Due to the quality and distinctive personality of the wines from this tiny wine-growing area of only about 70 ha, the former regional appellation Bourgogne Vézalay was upgraded to a communal Village Appellation, which will appear on labels starting with the 2017 vintage. Domaine La Croix Montjoie is the leading winery of the appellation. It was founded in 2009 by Sophie and Matthieu Woillez and today comprises about 10 ha of vineyards with stony limestone soils, where the Gryphaea gigantea fossils typical of this region can be found.
