Tignanello is a name that really needs no further introduction. Nevertheless, my father always refused to work with the wines. Too much production and, according to him, it was no longer possible for the production to come from the original vineyard that gave the winery and wine its name. I am now trying it starting with the 2021 vintage, for the 50th anniversary, to see how the wine has developed over the years.
The winery of the same name is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, in the gentle hills between the river valleys of Greve and Pesa. On the 319-hectare estate, about 130 hectares are planted with vines. The two most valuable vineyards of the winery, Tignanello and Solaia, are situated on soils of marine sediments and marlstone, with a high content of limestone and slate. Both wines are aged in their own respective cellars. The 12 to 14 month aging of Tignanello takes place 65 percent in French oak and to a smaller extent in Hungarian oak. 50 percent new barrels are used, the rest are in second and third use. After a further 12 months of bottle aging, Tignanello is released to the market. Due to high quality standards, some vintages were not produced, namely 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1984, 1992, and most recently 2002.
