Giefing

In the middle of the historic town center of the Free City of Rust is the winery of the Giefing family. In a 500-year-old vintner's house at Hauptstrasse 13, the foundation for the Giefing winery was laid. The Freihof dates back to the 15th century and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
On the gently sloping hills of the Rust hill country, on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl, all the vineyards of the family winery are scattered over more than 40 parcels, covering a total of around 16 hectares. Among them are such renowned vineyard names as: Umriss, Gemärk, Oberer Wald, Bandkräftn, and Rieglband.

The winemaking family focuses primarily on the Rust Trilogy; fruity, dry white wines - extract-rich red wines and the Rust Ausbruch.

The Giefing winery has been a member of the Renowned Wineries Burgenland - RWB since 2014 and was awarded the certificate "Sustainable Winery" in 2020.

The Pannonian climate prevailing here is characterized by cold, snow-poor winters, hot, dry summers, and a long, mild autumn.

Lake Neusiedl serves as a climate regulator. The diversity of the region is also reflected in the Rust soil structures: river deposits from the Alpine region, bedrock, blown fine sand (loess), and sediments of ancient seas.

Each vine is checked several times from spring to autumn to guide it in the desired direction. Shoots are broken off, excess grapes removed to achieve a maximum of physiological ripeness. Depending on the growth and condition of the vine and the grape, a maximum of 6 to 8 grapes are left on the vine. These are harvested exclusively by hand and processed gently.
