The Future of Burgundy

For a long time, Aligoté was considered the Cinderella among the white varieties of Burgundy – mostly in the shadow of its big brother Chardonnay, often downgraded to a basic wine or used as a Kir ingredient. But the tide is turning. More and more top winemakers are recognizing the potential of this distinctive grape variety, especially in times of climate change. Colleen and Nicholas are among these pioneers: in Les Tilles, a plot in Santenay with limestone-rich marl soil, their vines are over 55 years old, deeply rooted but with low yield – and therefore even more expression.

After hand harvesting, the grapes are pressed whole, spontaneously fermented, and aged for 12 months in used 228l barriques. This is followed by a refinement in stainless steel tanks for another 6 months – without bâtonnage, without filtration, with minimal sulfur.

For Hedonists & Purists

An Aligoté with style and character: on the nose, green pear, Granny Smith apple, white peach, and a hint of lime zest appear. Along with delicate notes of wet stone, roasted hazelnut, and fresh fennel herb. On the palate, straightforward, with a cool pull, juicy structure, and a fine, salty-tinged acidity that carries long.

The warm 2023 vintage gives the wine a slightly riper fruit richness than 2022, without losing freshness or precision. The final impression? Radiantly clear and extremely lively.

Appealing Substance

Less volume than a Chardonnay, but more energy, more edge, and more tension – that’s exactly what makes it so appealing. A wine for people who love texture. Excellent with sea bass ceviche with grapefruit, grilled mussels, or simply with fresh goat cheese with lemon zest and olive oil.

Maison Harbour

At first, the name Maison seems a bit odd for a Burgundy estate. Today we know better, because this winery is a home, one where a family lives and raises their children.

Actually, Nicholas Harbour and his Canadian wife Colleen come from finance and met in Luxembourg. But by 1999 at the latest, they were infected by the wine bug and the region. In 2012, their previous life in sterile office air was over. The wine-loving couple studied the technical, agricultural, and commercial aspects of their project at the wine school in Beaune. Their first vintage was 2013.

This story is hardly believable, as their at most 10,000 bottles leaving the cellar annually are the stuff dreams are made of. The couple shows a confident hand and a feel for their wines, which range from Village to Grand Cru. Slow, gentle maceration, where the Pinots are completely destemmed, creates a rather delicate, fine style aimed more at connoisseurs.

Spontaneously fermented and without bâtonnage (Chardonnay), they are bottled unfiltered and unfined (Pinot Noir) after a year of barrel aging in used containers in their semi-underground cellar. A true "Micro Vinificateur" with quality steadily improving from vintage to vintage, or as they say in Burgundy: "Garagistes extraordinaires."

The region: Burgundy

At the heart of probably the most famous wine region in the world lies the Côte d’Or, where the northern Côte de Nuits is distinguished from the southern Côte de Beaune. Around Nuits, fossil limestone dominates, on which Pinot Noir ripens to perfection. Around Beaune, the soil becomes more marly, which suits Chardonnay very well. Burgundy also includes Chablis, the Côte Chalonnaise, and the Mâconnais.
