In the shadow of the famous neighbor Gervrey-Chambertin, Fixin is considered a source of good red wines with an attractive price-quality ratio. The La Place vineyard is located below the hamlet of Fixey in the heart of the appellation. More precisely, the vineyard lies below the 1er Crus in the northern part of the commune. We have also now arrived taste-wise in the north. The wine has a bit more concentration than a Cote-de-Nuits-Villages and this somewhat firmer tannin structure from up here. Fixin is for the advanced, already with a bit of Gevrey character, but somewhat lighter and more accessible for significantly less money. Still, a very charming, fine wine.

Gérard Seguin

Gérard Seguin looks back on a winemaking family tradition dating back to 1850. Today, his estate covers a vineyard area of 6 hectares, planted exclusively with Pinot Noir. 3.3 ha of this are Gevrey-Chambertin sites, the best of which form the basis of the Vieilles Vignes, whose vines are well over 60 years old. One hectare is divided between Craipillot and Lavaux St. Jacques, the latter being probably the best Premier Cru site in Gevrey-Chambertin.

The winemaking is largely traditional. After a cold maceration of four to five days, the fermentation process begins with natural yeasts. Pure cultured yeasts are generally not used, as Seguin believes they produce standardized wines and eliminate any site-specific character. The aging takes place in oak barrels, of which 20 - 40 percent are new depending on the site and vintage. The aging lasts about 15 months until racking. Then three months are needed before bottling to blend the respective cuvées.

Seguin’s red wines are classics in the best sense. They always show the typical Gevrey-Chambertin balance of masculine berry fruit and spicy underbrush notes, as well as a remarkable mineral depth.
