The Sul Vulcano Etna Bianco DOC from Donnafugata is a distinctive white wine from the slopes of Etna – Europe’s most active volcano. It is made from the indigenous Carricante grape variety, which finds ideal conditions on mineral-rich volcanic soils. The vineyards are located at high altitudes on the northern side of Etna, giving the wine its unmistakable freshness and complexity.

On the nose, the Sul Vulcano Etna Bianco reveals a refined bouquet with citrus notes of grapefruit and lemon peel, accompanied by delicate floral nuances and a salty-mineral streak, characteristic of volcanic soils. On the palate, the wine is balanced and lively, with spicy freshness, subtle fruit, and an elegant, long-lasting structure.

Soils and Climate: Sul Vulcano is grown in eastern Sicily, on the northern side of Etna, between Randazzo and Castiglione di Sicilia. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 730 to 750 meters above sea level. The soil consists of sandy, lava-based material with a slightly acidic to neutral pH and is rich in organic matter. The deep, mineral-rich lava soil allows for strong root development. This region north of the volcano experiences lower rainfall compared to other slopes of Etna. Summers are cool, with significant temperature differences between day and night.

Winemaking and Aging:

Only Carricante grapes from carefully selected vineyards on the northern slopes of Etna are used for the Sul Vulcano Etna Bianco. The hand harvest is done gently in small crates between September 20 and 29 to optimally preserve the freshness and integrity of the grapes.

In the winery, the grapes undergo a second manual selection on a sorting table before being gently pressed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place under temperature control at 15–16 °C in stainless steel tanks to preserve the delicate aromatics.

The wine then ages for 10 months, mostly in stainless steel tanks. A small portion is additionally aged in French barriques of second and third use, which adds finesse and depth to the wine. After blending, the wine undergoes about 16 months of bottle aging before being released for sale – perfectly balanced and ready to drink.

Designer Label: The label is a tribute to Etna: a volcano goddess reigns on the Sul Vulcano label. Her intense colors – red, yellow, and shimmering black – reflect those of Europe’s highest active volcano. This ancient, powerful, and feminine deity symbolizes “the Montagna,” as Etna is called by the locals. Sul Vulcano is a love letter: a pure, fragrant, and elegant wine that breathes the energy of this unique place in the heart of the Mediterranean.

Donnafugata

The History

The Donnafugata winery was established in Sicily on the initiative of a family that has renewed the style and perception of Sicilian wine worldwide. Giacomo Rallo, the fourth generation of a family with more than 170 years of experience in the world of quality wine, founded Donnafugata in 1983 together with his wife Gabriella, a pioneer of winemaking in Sicily. Today, their children José and Antonio run the company together with a team focused on top quality.

The Mediterranean island Sicily is a wine-growing region with extraordinary potential. Donnafugata promotes this diversity and cultivates its vineyards in very different contexts: in areas steeply above the sea, in the hills, and also in the mountains. The best combination of terroir and grape varieties (more than 20) is always considered.

The Wineries

The company includes a historic cellar and four wineries. In western Sicily, in Contessa Entellina, where Donnafugata originated, there is a cellar for winemaking, 302 hectares of vineyards, and 9 olive groves.

On the volcanic island Pantelleria between Sicily and Africa, the cellar is located in the Khamma area with 68 hectares of vineyards cultivated with Zibibbo using the Alberello method of Pantelleria (UNESCO World Heritage), and 5 hectares of olive groves.

In eastern Sicily, on the northern side of Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, there is a cellar with a barrel cellar in Randazzo, 35 hectares of vineyards, and 2 olive groves.

In the DOC Vittoriaarea, in Acate, there is the new cellar with 36 hectares of vineyards. Finally, the historic family cellars of Marsala are an example of a production company that is always up to date. Here, the impressive underground barrel cellar can also be visited.

Donnafugata places great importance on sustainability and has been following it for over 30 years of sustainable agricultural practices: The focus is on the vineyard, the carbon and water footprint, biodiversity and the enhancement of native varieties energy saving, biodiversity and clean energy to preserve the landscape and sustainable architecture.Origin of the name In
