The Flagship

The Cartology is the flagship of the "Alheit Vineyards" project; it is the result of hard work and careful observation in the vineyard. It is now in its 12th vintage. The grapes, especially from old, non-irrigated vineyards, ferment as naturally as possible without any intervention in the vinification. This vintage of Cartology consists of 94% Chenin Blanc from the vineyards in Skurfberg, Paardeberg, Upper Blaauwklippen, False Bay, and Tygerberg. The small 6% share is Sémillon from the old La Colline estate in Franschhoek. Varieties that have had a tradition at the Cape for centuries.

First, there is a strict hand harvest, followed by a gentle whole-cluster pressing and spontaneous fermentation in cement eggs and used barrels. The fermentation duration varies from parcel to parcel (3-11 months). Afterwards, the young wine matures for another five months in stainless steel on the fine lees.

Keep going man, keep going!

“This wine makes me smile. There are times as a winemaker when you wonder to yourself if you still have the conviction and the passion you once did. This wine puts a reassuring hand on my shoulder and answers the secret internal question. Passion is great, experience is greater. Conviction grows into perseverance. Keep going man, keep going.” Chris Alheit

Notes of ripe pears, a subtle citrus touch, and some fine herbal notes flow from the glass. This vintage is noticeably more energetic than its predecessor, with a perfect balance between richness and crystalline freshness. The finish is long and flavorful; anyone who doesn’t drink this stuff is missing out!

Pick young

In its youthful phase, this wine is the most fun, but it can easily be stored in the cellar for several years. Best enjoyed from a large Burgundy glass at a slightly cool temperature.
Thanks to its soft melt, Cartology is the perfect companion to butter-fried sea bass fillet with manioc purée.

"The simplicity of things" is probably the foundation of the philosophy of Suzaan and Chris Alheit, who launched the Alheit Vineyards project in 2010 after traveling the world together, getting married, and traveling a bit more. Their goal is to give the wine a clear South African identity, which means consistent restraint. The quality and beauty of the wines originate from the vineyards of the Cape and are brought out only through simple but careful winemaking; without the addition of yeasts, enzymes, or sulfur. Chris and Suzaan hardly intervene in the winemaking process, avoid fining, and do not use new oak barrels. "We’re hoping to find the voice of the land, not the mark of the winemaker." Experience, knowledge, manual work, a close connection to the region’s winemakers, and the avoidance of various oenological procedures are the basis of these authentic wines. Only in this way do they manage to capture the quality and beauty grown in the vineyard in the bottle. At Hemelrand Farm, the focus is on the Chenin Blanc grape from old bush vines in high-altitude vineyards. The variety was already known at the Cape 80 years earlier, before Cabernet Sauvignon was even spoken of in Bordeaux. Nevertheless, the two are not fanatical but rather prudent when it comes to the best possible quality. If they find a younger but better site, it will be given preference. The second grape variety that belongs to the Alheits’ philosophy is Semillon. There are some very old vineyards of it in South Africa, especially in the formerly French part of the Cape, Franschhoek. The expressive wines of the Alheits are made as naturally as possible, but not ideologically, rather very pragmatically. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered for their fresh drinkability. The region: Walker Bay Walker Bay near Hermanus benefits from its proximity to the ocean and the associated cool winds. Weathered shale dominates the soils in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc & Syrah find the best conditions due to the different altitudes. The first vines were only planted at the end of the 1970s.
