In 1994, Francesco Leanza cultivated the land now known as Podere Salicutti. He planted the vines on the slope, arranged around the winery, the heart of the estate. The Salicutti estate covers a total of 11 hectares, including 4.5 hectares of vineyards, an olive grove, and forest. In 2015, Sabine and Felix Eichbauer took over the estate and have consistently continued Leanza’s commitment to organic farming—with a critically reflective view on the influence of humans and cultivation techniques. Podere Salicutti is the first organically certified winery in Montalcino. The vines planted in 1994 grow in soils that have never been exposed to conventional pesticides.
The Cru Piaggione is 1.2 hectares in size and lies at the foot of the winery in an east-southeast facing vineyard with skeletal limestone soils at 420 to 450 meters elevation. The vineyard is divided by a terrain step into two differently homogeneous parcels and was planted in 1994 and 2007. The wines from Piaggione are like a fist in a velvet glove.
