The Petrolo winery is located in the Val d'Arno di Sopra, which stretches between Florence and Arezzo. Just like Podere Il Carnasciale.
The quality of the vineyards, which are located in the hills west and east of the Arno River, was already described in 1716 by Duke Cosimo III de' Medici as particularly outstanding and declared one of the four best areas for viticulture and olive growing. The gently rolling landscape is characterized by Mediterranean forest, alternating with vineyards and olive groves.
In 1947, the winery was sold to the Bazzocchi-Sanjust family. Today, with Luca Sanjust, the third generation of the family is involved in winemaking. Luca's grandfather was friends with Giulio Gambelli, one of the most famous oenologists of his time, and made simple yet very good wine with his help. With the entry of Luca's mother Lucia into the winery, more and more focus was placed on quality.
Today, out of a total of over 270 hectares of land, 31 hectares of vines belong to the award-winning winery. The locations range from 250 to 450 meters in altitude and are cultivated organically. The soils consist of a complex mixture of marl, small stones, sandstone, and the typical clay and limestone-rich Albarese rock of the Chianti region. Yields are minimal here – averaging 20 to 25 HL. The combination of altitude, soil, and this concentration of low yields leads to the unique character of the wines from the winery.
