The Rubicon from the South African winery Meerlust is one of the country's top wines. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, grown on different soils. The Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrives on granite soils, gives the wine structure, while the Merlot from clay soils provides a soft, rounded component.

The Rubicon ages for about 21 months in a combination of new and used barriques. It is characterized by aromas of cassis, plums, and black cherries, accompanied by spicy notes such as pepper, licorice, and tobacco. On the palate, it offers lively fruit, ripe tannins, and a fine mineral spiciness. Ideal with hearty meat dishes and mature cheese.

The Meerlust Estate is located in the Stellenbosch wine region on the banks of the Eersteriver and was founded as early as 1693 by the German Henning Hussing, who also built the Cape Dutch manor house that still stands today in 1693. Since 1756, the estate has been owned by the Myburgh family - now in its eighth generation. The entire property impresses from the outside, as all the houses are true treasures of Cape Dutch architecture and are protected as historic monuments.

On 160 ha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay are cultivated. In addition, there are experimental vineyards with Petit Verdot, Viognier, and Sauvignon Blanc. All Meerlust wines are always aged in French barriques.
