The Jermann winery has been one of Italy's best white wine producers for decades. It was founded over 140 years ago in 1881 by Anton Jermann, who had moved from Austria's Burgenland to Friuli at the time. However, the major breakthrough in quality only came a few generations later in the 1970s, when the innovative Silvio Jermann took charge of the winery. The trained oenologist pursued an uncompromisingly rigorous quality approach from the start. It should not be forgotten today that "clean," purist white wines were not yet the norm in Italy back then, and the focus was still mainly on producing mass-market wine.
Silvio ushered in a new era for the family winery and Italian white wine overall with his constant pursuit of improvement and excellence. For his achievements, he was named Italy's most important white wine producer by Gambero Rosso in 2016.
Sustainable vineyards, visionary blends, and legendary icons
The key to quality lies in the 170 hectares of vineyards that are cultivated ecologically and sustainably. The biodiversity of the vineyards is an important factor for the health of the vines and also the complexity of the grapes.
Silvio is not only an innovative entrepreneur but loves to think outside the box. He is also a great fan of mental discipline and the power of insight. After many years working abroad, he was one of the first winemakers in the region to produce successful blends from unique indigenous grape varieties with international varieties like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc – in doing so, he also resisted current market trends.
Vintage Tunina is now considered one of the legendary wines of Friuli. The blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Ribolla Gialla, and Malvasia Istriana is aged in a special cellar room with an almost magical aura. The Capo Martino produced there is also among the most respected wines of the region. The cuvée of Friulano and Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, and Picolit is at once complex, elegant, and marked by intense density. Although Dreams is a pure Chardonnay, it has also rightfully established its international reputation.
Jermann's harmonious wines are purist, clear, and characterized by impressive flavor depth as well as mineral extract. They are also dense, extremely delicious, full-bodied, and often finely spiced from oak aging. What all the wines have in common is their enormous aging potential. Even the "normal," simple varietal wines from Jermann only become truly beautiful after three years.
Jermann in Collio – international prestige and future with Antinori
The wines mostly come from the mountainous Friuli – Julian Venetia region in northeastern Italy, and the Jermann winery includes two cellars, one in Farra d'Isonzo and one in Ruttars, which is surrounded by 20 hectares of the best cru sites of Collio Goriziano.
In 2021, Silvio Jermann sold shares of his family business to the Antinori family. The Tuscan family dynasty, like Jermann himself, stands for uncompromising quality and innovation, ensuring that the winery will continue to be a top player in the region in terms of quality in the future.
