Giefing

In the middle of the historic town center of the free town of Rust is the winery of the Giefing family. In a 500-year-old winegrower's house at Hauptstrasse 13, the foundation for the Giefing winery was laid. The Freihof dates back to the 15th century and is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.
On the gently rising slopes of the Ruster hill country, on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl, the family winery's various locations are scattered over more than 40 parcels, covering a total of around 16 hectares. Among them are such sonorous vineyard names as: Umriss, Gemärk, Oberer Wald, Bandkräftn, and Rieglband.

The winemaking family focuses primarily on the Ruster Trilogy; fruity, dry white wines - extract-rich red wines and the Ruster Ausbruch.

The Giefing winery has been a member of the Renowned Wineries of Burgenland - RWB since 2014 and was awarded the "Sustainable Winery" certificate in 2020.

The Pannonian climate that prevails here is characterized by cold, low-snow winters, hot, dry summers, and a long, mild autumn.

Lake Neusiedl serves as a climate regulator. The diversity of the area is also reflected in the Ruster soil structures: river deposits from the Alpine region, ancient rock, wind-blown fine sand (loess), and sediments from prehistoric seas.

Each vine is monitored several times from spring to autumn to guide it in the desired direction. Shoots are broken out, excess grapes are removed to achieve maximum physiological ripeness. Depending on the growth and condition of the vine and the grape, a maximum of 6 to 8 grapes are left on the vine. These are harvested exclusively by hand and processed gently.
