The crisp, mineral Chardonnays from the pilgrimage site of Vézelay, located south of Chablis, have so far been known to only a few connoisseurs and were considered one of the best-kept secrets in France. Due to the quality and distinctive personality of the wines from this tiny region, which covers only about 70 hectares, the previous regional appellation Bourgogne Vézalay has been upgraded to a communal Village Appellation, which will appear on labels starting with the 2017 vintage. Domaine La Croix Montjoie is the leading winery of the appellation. It was founded in 2009 by Sophie and Matthieu Woillez and now encompasses about 10 hectares of vineyards with stony limestone soils, where the characteristic Grypheagigantea fossils of this region can be found.
