TuscanyAndrea Franchetti – this magician with the tiny winery in the middle of nowhere in Tuscany between Montalcino and the Maremma. Limestone soils, tiny quantities. Tenuta di Trinoro is his top wine.
60% Merlot 40% Cabernet Franc.
Andrea Franchetti was probably the master of Cabernet Franc in Italy even before Duemani. His Franchetti can easily compete with the crème de la crème. No matter what is made in Saint-Émilion or the Loire. Here you have the incredible spiciness of Cabernet Franc, partly created by adding ripe stems during fermentation. Everything is spontaneously fermented. Aged in wood, concrete, and amphorae. High alcohol content, but when well made, as here, it is strangely not noticeable. The nose is completely dominated by Cabernet Franc and the stems.
Dark, congealed blood from the extremely iron-rich soils, aged meat, rosehip, and very ripe plum. So much red, ripe power from below. Soft and lush. Alongside, lots of orange zest, rock masses like granite mixed with slate. Almost piercing in the minty, eucalyptus-focused, ripe fruit. Allspice pepper added, chili already on the nose.
The mouthfeel makes you think. What is this? Gorgeously dense, ripe, and mineral at the same time. This is Cabernet Franc straight out of the picture book, if you want Cabernet Franc with so much strength and power. The tannins are velvety and polished, nothing is brittle or unripe, but above all, there is a lot of it. A real bomb in the mouth!
The wine must be locked away for ten years. It is far too intense when young and absolutely needs elegance over ripeness. A Cabernet Franc that has too much of everything. But a truly great wine. With a huge oscilloscope of stem freshness, underlying citrus acidity, and very ripe fruit. Without a doubt one of the very best wines of modern Italy. Unique!
