This is the flagship wine of Il Poggione, and it is a must-have for anyone who collects wines from this famous winery. The oldest plot of the estate, Vigna Paganelli, is a 12-hectare vineyard that was established in 1964. It features a rich variety of old Sangiovese clones used for the newer plantings.

The dark bouquet entices with a hint of flint, generous notes of spiced plums, cured leather, and hints of marjoram, tarragon, and basil.

Despite its size, it carries its breadth with charming lightness. The fruit is rich and sweet, while ripe, grainy tannins form a framework. Beneath all these layers, a mineral note emerges. Here you get everything, including the distinctive power and fullness of Brunello, which is not easy to achieve with such careful balance.

The finish is structured, fresh, and long, and the longer it lingers in the glass, the more pronounced the leathery and spicy aromas become.

Produced only in the best vintages, the 2019 is once again a great wine!

"Slightly open, tobacco-like and somewhat dried-herb scent of predominantly dark berries with some smoke, tar, leather, a certain roastiness, and undergrowth. Tart, quite firm, still rather closed fruit, present, fine-grained tannins and a certain acidity bite, smoky and slightly roasted tones, herbal and peppery ethereal notes on the palate, persistent, hinted sooty notes, cherries and noticeable salt, some depth, bacon nuances, very good, firm, tart finish." Il Poggione: Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli 2019

Il Poggione

The history of the winery, as we know it today, begins at the beginning of the 19th century, when Lavinio Franceschi bought some land on the hills descending to the Orcia Valley near Sant'Angelo.

Today, the impressive estate covers more than 600 hectares, of which 125 hectares are planted with vines. The well-known international wine guides have been showering the winery with praise for its consistently high quality for many decades. About 60 hectares of vineyard area are authorized for Brunello. In the fifth generation, Livia and Leopoldo Franceschi now own the estate, while the management of the winery has been entrusted to the prudent director Fabrizio Bindocci for over 30 years.

The well-ventilated soils, the southwest exposure of the vineyards, and the influence of the cooling air currents from the Orcia Valley ensure, in most years, an invigorating, finely structured, and silky Brunello that is often ready to drink after just a few years and unfolds its full potential. The two wines Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino are absolute "blue chips" and ennoble every wine shelf.
