The exquisite Mille e una Notte (Thousand and One Nights) is the iconic wine of Donna Fugata.

Mille e una Notte was born from the dream of Donnafugata founders Giacomo and Gabriella, who wanted to create a great Sicilian red wine. Therefore, it is a true invitation to discover the expression of the great red wines of Sicily. It is produced in the Sicilia DOC designation from the best grapes of the Petit Verdot, Syrah, Nero d’Avola, and other native red grape varieties from the vineyards of Contessa Entellina.

In the glass, it shows an intense ruby red color. On the nose, it presents a complex bouquet characterized by notes of red cherry and black blackberry, fresh balsamic hints (eucalyptus), spicy touches of black pepper, and delicate nuances of sweet roasted aroma reminiscent of vanilla.

On the palate, it is smooth and enveloping, with great structure and ripe, refined tannins. Then on the palate, Mille e una Notte is dense and full-bodied, with broad and deep aromas of ripe berries, violet, cocoa, and tobacco. The finish is particularly long and excellently balanced. It is a magnificent, charismatic, full-bodied, and spicy Sicilian wine.

Today, it is an icon of Italian winemaking art, the result of a tailored work that is at the heart of Donnafugata’s production philosophy. Mille e una Notte is made from the best grapes of the year, sourced from the estate’s historic vineyards. The harvest is done by hand, with careful selection of the grapes in the vineyard. The harvested grapes are stored in crates to ensure the integrity of the berries. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes are cleaned on a shaking table, and the berries are sorted with a destemmer that removes green and overripe berries. The grapes of the different varieties are vinified separately: fermentation takes place in conical stainless steel tanks with maceration on the skins for about 14 days at a temperature of 28°C – 30°C. During fermentation, punching down is done using a manually controlled piston. The piston gently but very effectively submerges the cap of skins into the fermenting must, ensuring balanced extraction of polyphenols. Afterward, aging takes place for about 13-14 months in new French oak barriques and at least 24 months in the bottle to achieve its legendary complexity and elegance, which gives it incredible aging potential.

The vineyards are located at an altitude between 200 and 400 meters above sea level in a hilly area. They are planted on a mosaic of clay and limestone soils. The pronounced color, along with a hint of violet and balsamic nuances (eucalyptus) combined with fruity, ripe notes, captivates the eyes and nose even before the first sip.

A special feature of the wine lies in its label, which depicts the palace where Queen Maria Carolina found refuge. It was the preferred residence of the writer Tomasi di Lampedusa in Santa Margherita Belice. Gabriella Anca Rallo captures the image and places it under a starry sky, reminiscent of the Thousand and One Nights stories of oriental literature.

Donnafugata

The History

The Donnafugata winery was established in Sicily on the initiative of a family that has renewed the style and perception of Sicilian wine worldwide. Giacomo Rallo, the fourth generation of a family with more than 170 years of experience in the world of quality wine, founded Donnafugata in 1983 together with his wife Gabriella, a pioneer of winemaking in Sicily. Today, their children José and Antonio run the company together with a team focused on top quality.

The Mediterranean island Sicily is a wine region with extraordinary potential. Donnafugata promotes this diversity and cultivates its vineyards in very different contexts: in areas steeply above the sea, in the hills, and also in the mountains. The best combination of terroir and grape varieties (more than 20) is always carefully considered.

The Wineries

The company includes a historic cellar and four wineries. In western Sicily, in Contessa Entellina, where Donnafugata originated, there is a cellar for winemaking, 302 hectares of vineyards, and 9 olive groves.

On the volcanic island Pantelleria between Sicily and Africa, the cellar is located in the Khamma area with 68 hectares of vineyards planted with Zibibbo using the Alberello method of Pantelleria (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and 5 hectares of olive groves.

In eastern Sicily, on the northern side of Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, there is a cellar with a barrel cellar in Randazzo, 35 hectares of vineyards, and 2 olive groves.

In the DOC Vittoriaarea, in Acate, there is the new cellar with 36 hectares of vineyards. Finally, the historic family cellars of Marsala are an example of a production company that is always up to date. Here, the impressive underground barrel cellar can also be visited.

Donnafugata places great importance on Sustainability and has been following it for over 30 years of sustainable agricultural practices: The focus is on the vineyard, the carbon and water footprint, the biodiversity and the enhancement of native grape varieties, the energy savings and the clean energy, to preserve the landscape and sustainable architecture.

Origin of the name

In Dialogue with art is where Donnafugata finds its uniqueness. The name refers to the novel “The Leopard” and the story of the queen who took refuge in the area where the company’s vineyards are now located, which inspired the logo unique and inimitable are the artist labels of Donnafugata, which represent an important company feature. The inspiration for these special labels, which tell the world and colors of Donnafugata, comes from Gabriella; the creative execution is by Stefano Vitale.

Donnafugata means tailored expertise. Among the company’s greatest achievements are the wine icons: The Mille e una Notte, renowned red wine from the Contessa Entellina estate, the passito wine from Pantelleria Ben Ryé and the red Crus from Etna Fragore Etna Rosso DOC Contrada Montelaguardia as well as the Etna Rosso DOC Contrada Marchesa.

Collaboration with Dolce&Gabbana

The love for detail and passion for Sicily unite Dolce&Gabbana and Donnafugata in a partnership where creativity and craftsmanship meet: thus was born a wine collection with a strong Mediterranean personality, exceptional ambassadors of Sicilian colors, scents, and culture worldwide: the seductive rosé Pink, the fascinating white wine Isolano, the elegant red wine Cuordilava and the prestigious red wine Tancredi.

Donnafugata sees its role as a company in joining forces with producers of high-quality wine to promoteand strengthen Sicilian and Italian wine worldwide.
