70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc.

The Guado de‘ Gemoli from Chiappini is a robust, structured Bolgheri Rosso Superiore red wine that matures for 20 months in barriques. On the nose, Guado de’Gemoli has a complex aroma spectrum of jam, spices, licorice, tobacco, and graphite.

The "Guado de‘ Gemoli" from Chiappini is a Bolgheri Rosso Superiore made from the blend of three classic "Bordeaux" grape varieties, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. This allows it to fully express the characteristics of the Bolgheri region. An elegant and powerful Bolgheri Superiore, distinguished by a truly admirable aromatic complexity that can develop over many years and adds new nuances to the complex palette of scents.

Thanks to its good acidity and tannin structure, Guado de’Gemoli is excellently suited for aging. A complex and somewhat austere red wine that pairs well with hearty meat and game dishes.

The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes come from the Le Grottine vineyard, established in 1978, with soils of sand, clay, limestone, and the so-called Bolgheri conglomerate rock.

The Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes come from the Felciaino vineyard, which was established in 1986.

The harvest takes place between the third week of September and mid-October, depending on which grape varieties are to be picked. The grapes are fermented separately by variety in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks on natural yeasts and undergo malolactic fermentation in French barriques, where they also mature for over 20 months. 15% new barrique barrels are used. This is followed by a further refinement of 12 months directly in the bottle before release.

The Guado de’Gemoli is produced in a limited edition of 10,000 bottles annually.

Giovanni Chiappini

History and Location

The Chiappini winery is located in the heart of the DOC Bolgheri area, on the wine route where the region's largest wineries are situated. The history is one of an unbroken and continually renewed family tradition: The family head Giovanni Chiappini, son of farmers from the Marche region, immigrated to Bolgheri with his parents in the 1950s, attracted by the opportunity to buy and cultivate a piece of land here in Tuscany. At that time, Bolgheri was a sleepy village far from the current fame of its wine and quality. Viticulture played only a minor role in those years. Back then, vegetable, fruit, and olive groves shared the landscape with vineyards, which were mainly intended for home use. It was only with the rise of the "Super Tuscans" that Bolgheri became a trendy location for high-quality wines. The special feature of the Chiappinis' work and growth lies in the privileged relationship they maintain with the land. A Mother Earth that is interpreted and transformed in symbiosis with the farming labor.

The winery today

Today, the company spans 27 hectares of land, of which 15 hectares are vineyards, allowing an average annual production of about 80,000 bottles. Currently, the typical grape varieties of the area are cultivated: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, a small amount of Sangiovese, and Vermentino. Additionally, olive trees are still strongly present on the land, a living and vital testimony to Bolgheri's past when the hills were mainly dedicated to olive cultivation. Out of respect for the landscape and our roots, the Chiappinis have decided to keep them alive and plant the new vines among the old rows of olive trees that are still productive.

Since 2010, the winery has been managed entirely organically. The desire for growth always goes hand in hand with the pursuit of quality and respect for the values, in the name of a unique terroir, which is Bolgheri.

The estate covers 27 hectares and is spread over 4 different vineyards, whose names also serve as the namesakes for the wines. Between 1978 (establishment of the vineyard Le Grottine) and 2012 (establishment of the vineyard Ferruggini), the company took on its current form, even though the center of the company is still located on Via Bolgherese, where the winery, agritourism, and the 20-year-old vineyards with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc are located, from which Chiappini harvests the best grapes for the Bolgheri Superiore Guado de‘ Gemoli and for the product line Lienà (for which a total of about 600 bottles are produced). One of the vineyards borders the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia. The Guado de´Gemoni Bolgheri Superiore was rated 100 out of 100 points by Wine Enthusiast in 2013.With this rating, the winery suddenly became famous and has since been unable to meet the demand for its wines. Meanwhile, the two daughters Martina and Lisa have also joined the board and are leading the company into the next generation.

The Chiappini winery is an excellently managed family business, a hidden gem that creates stunning and impressive red wines in the immediate neighborhood of the large, renowned wineries.

"Each label comes from a specific area of the winery, so that on the journey through our vineyards, you can draw a map of taste." Chiappini
