The Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso "Orto Baul" DOC from Franchini Winery is a distinctive Ripasso with freshness and depth, embodying the dynamic, modern interpretation of the Ripasso style from the classic Valpolicella region.

Franchini combines precise craftsmanship with a clear sense of origin and emphasizes the mineral signature of its terroir.

In the glass, the "Orto Baul" shows a bright ruby red, lively and clear. The nose is dominated by delicate floral and herbal notes of geranium and peony. These are joined by crisp cherry and raspberry aromas.

Spicy accents, intense hints of undergrowth, and a distinctive mineral note give the bouquet depth and a sense of place.

On the palate, the wine is fresh, juicy, and salty, with clear fruit and lively structure. The fine-grained, stimulating tannins add tension and underline the determined, youthful character of this Ripasso.

Origin & Grape Varieties

The blend consists of Corvina, Rondinella, Corvinone, and Oseleta , complemented by smaller amounts of other indigenous grape varieties. The vineyards are located in the classic Valpolicella Classico area and produce grapes with freshness, expression, and structure.

Harvest & Vinification

The hand harvest in mid-September is done exclusively by hand to ensure optimal grape quality. The alcoholic fermentation initially takes place for about 14 days in stainless steel tanks .

After 3–4 months , the wine undergoes a second fermentation according to the traditional Ripasso method  on the Amarone grape pomace. This refermentation lasts about 10 days and is accompanied by daily pump-overs, which give the wine additional depth, spice, and complexity.

Aging

The aging takes place over 24 months in barriques and tonneaux made of French oak (second and third use), followed by an additional 6 months of bottle aging. This results in a harmonious Ripasso with clear structure and fine wood integration.

Each of the prestigious bottles is individually hand-wrapped – a visible sign of true craftsmanship and lived family tradition. This special care dates back to the time of Emilio Franchini, the grandfather of the current owner Giuliano Franchini, and is still passionately continued today. Thus, each bottle contains an authentic piece of Italian wine culture, created for connoisseurs and gourmets who value quality, origin, and attention to detail.

Franchini

Antica Corte Forlago is located with its buildings and vineyards in a hilly area. The vines are cultivated using the traditional Veronese pergola method (single and double) and offer a beautiful view of the valley below. All vineyards are a clear symbol of the craftsmanship that has shaped the winemaking tradition since its beginnings.

The harvest is done exclusively by hand, selecting only the best and ripest grapes. After harvesting, the grapes are placed in wooden crates, where they undergo the traditional appassimento technique (drying technique) at natural temperature for several months.

The oldest part of the winery dates back to 1460 and houses the barrel cellar, a clear testament to the region's ancient past. In silence, the wines rest and mature in French and American oak barrels.

Inside Corte Forlago, beneath the entrance area, lies an old ice cellar. Today, the old ice cellar is used as a special aging cellar for the most historic wines of the Franchini family.

The ice house, the centerpiece of the entire building, has a history spanning centuries.

These valuable bottles rest in darkness and silence, evolving thanks to the magic of time, becoming better and developing with each passing day.
