The 2022 Le Pergole Torte is just as magnificent as last year. Deep and expansive in the glass, with breathtaking depth, the 2022 stains the palate with layers of dark fruits, mocha, new leather, and cedarwood. With a little time in the glass, the 2022 begins to blossom and leads to a finish that explodes in the back. As has been the case for some time, the differences between Montevertine and Pergole Torte increasingly come down to style. The 2022 spent one year in French oak barrels from Damy, followed by a second year in barriques. It will need a few more years to shed its baby fat so it can fully express itself.

In the cellar, work is "very traditional, but with modern equipment." The hand-harvested grapes are macerated for about a month in concrete tanks without temperature control and then aged for one to two years in large Slavonian oak barrels. Only the single-varietal Sangiovese Le Pergole Torte spends one year in French barriques and only afterward another year in the large barrels.

Martino Manetti consistently continues the unmistakable, distinctive, and traditional style of his father with the help of his oenologists Bruno Bini and Paolo Salvi. Very pleasing. This is, of course, also appreciated by international wine critics who rave every year and award top honors. We are convinced that you will be enthusiastic as well, especially if you give the wines some time after opening.

Montevertine

Today, when a wine lover has a bottle of Le Pergole Torte with its distinctive artist label in front of them, it is hard to believe that this famous winery was just the holiday home of an Italian industrialist fifty years ago, who wanted to produce a few bottles of wine for friends as a hobby. Even more incredible is that he only wanted to know if it was okay and sent a few bottles to Vinitaly in Verona, where they were served by the Siena Chamber of Commerce. It must have tasted good even then, as the response was enormous and encouraged Sergio Manetti to give up his high-paying job and become a winemaker. The rest is an unparalleled success story. Today, the wines of Montevertine are among the absolute top wines of Italy.

The winery, with its just under 18 hectares, is still comparatively small. Only three wines are produced from only three grape varieties. Sangiovese dominates with 90%, along with Colorino and Canaiolo. No international grape varieties, although Montevertine and Le Pergole Torte are often called "Supertuscans." The third in the group is called Pian Del Ciampolo and, according to Martino Manetti, the son of the company founder who died in 2000, is basically a second wine in the sense of the Bordeaux classification. In addition to the three wines, a small amount of exquisite olive oil is pressed and a fine grappa is distilled from the Sangiovese pomace.

Nine vineyards, all located at around 450 m above sea level near the dense forests above Radda in Chianti. This small region is often considered one of the best in the Chianti Classico area. The nearby forests and the mountains behind them create a slightly cooler climate, especially at night. A lot of wind blows the fog early from the vineyards and dries the grapes well. The soils are stony and calcareous, which often produces more delicate, elegant wines with Sangiovese. Until 1997, about 3,200 vines per hectare were planted using Guyot training; the newer vineyards are denser, with up to 5,000 plants, and are cultivated using the Italian Cordone Speronato training. The cultivation has always been close to nature; since 2009, it has been strictly organic, fertilized with homemade compost, and vine diseases are controlled with a minimum of copper and sulfur.

"Since then, the house's wines have become flagship drops for the entire region and deliver a Sangiovese as complete as hardly anywhere else in Tuscany. Unmistakable in style, original and full of balance, Montevertine wines have secured an absolute top spot in the national wine league." Gambero Rosso
