L’Albereta is the flagship of Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara, from the eponymous single-vineyard vineyard, which is cultivated using organic methods. Its distinctive identity is owed, among other things, to its rich and robust structure. It matures for 12 months in oak barrels and is rich in aromas of apricots, honey, cedarwood, and roasted almonds.

L’Albereta presents itself in a straw-yellow color with golden reflections. This is a ripe, sun-kissed, and full-bodied wine. The Vernaccia Riserva impresses already on the nose with its strong character, its clear, precise aroma, and then also with a distinctive presence on the palate. It is lively, well-structured, and of a pleasant complexity, emphasized by valuable mineral notes and a refreshing acidity. With a long, creamy finish accompanied by smoke, spices, and a delicate hint of cinnamon. These qualities give it great potential for long-lasting aging and storage.

The vineyard from which the Acereta Riserva DOCG comes is located at an altitude of 250 to 280 meters above sea level. The soil, rich in limestone skeletons, features tuffaceous soils. The harvest is done by hand from the third decade of September. The grapes are carefully selected and handpicked. Vinification takes place by maceration on the skins with whole grapes. This is followed by a gentle pressing of the entire grape mass. Spontaneous fermentation occurs at controlled temperature in large wooden barrels. The wine matures for one year on fine lees in wooden barrels and six months in concrete tanks. Afterwards, L’Albereta remains for another year in the bottle before it is released to the market.

The production of this great Vernaccia Riserva is limited to 7,000 bottles.

Il Colombaio of Santa Chiara

In the region around the imposing towers of the medieval town of San Gimignano, the oenologist Alessio Logi has dedicated himself to probably the most famous white wine of Tuscany. Vernaccia di San Gimignano is one of the oldest white wines in Italy, mentioned in records from the year 1276 and in Dante's Divine Comedy. This white wine is shaped by a centuries-old history of great aging potential and complex flavor aromas.

The Tuscan Vernaccia grape variety, which should not be confused with the red Vernatsch from South Tyrol, impresses with a great expressive potential, showing how the territory and its cultivation affect the taste. The young winemaker was inspired by his father Mario to bring out the multilayered aromas of this white variety from his vineyards in an environmentally friendly way.

In a region famous for red wine like Tuscany, Alessio has been passionately producing his highly awarded Vernaccia white wines at his estate Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara since 2002. In the cellar, he is supported by his older brothers Giampiero and Stefano, while their father Mario, who is over eighty years old, still sets the pace in the vineyards.

"My father taught me that the vines are a reflection of the soil and that you can improve quality in the cellar but not change it," Alessio says in conversation. Therefore, the clay-rich soils of his vineyards have been cultivated according to organic guidelines from day one. Since close collaboration with the talented oenologist Nicola Berti, the winemaker also works with significantly shorter maceration times, thus bringing out the fruity-spicy taste of the Vernaccia grape and its typically delicately bitter almond note much more precisely.

What impresses sustainably about this family business is the combination of the father's long-standing experience and the contemporary awareness of the three sons to dedicate themselves respectfully to the environment of their Vernaccia production – which is undoubtedly reflected in the great personality, structure, and aging potential of their organic white wines.

From the refreshingly fruity Selvabianca, fermented in stainless steel, the portfolio of Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara extends to creamier, richer versions like the powerful single-vineyard wine Campo alla Pieve or the Riserva Albereta aged in 25-hectoliter barrels. This diversity does justice to the history and good reputation of this ancient white wine from San Gimignano and guarantees uncompromising top quality.
