ApuliaSessantanni – sixty years. The age of the gnarled bush vines, traditionally trained in the Alberello style on the iron oxide-rich Terra Rossa soils of San Marzano and Sava. This training method, where the vines grow low and without wire frames, is labor-intensive but protects the grapes from the scorching Apulian sun and naturally limits yields – about 3,000 kilograms per hectare.
Cantine San Marzano created the Sessantanni label, which has significantly shaped the international perception of Apulian wines. The fully ripe grapes are hand-harvested at the end of September. 80 percent of the must macerates for 18 days, the remaining 20 percent for 25 days to maximize extraction. Vinification with indigenous yeasts, twelve months aging in French and American oak barrels.
Dense, almost impenetrable ruby violet. The nose overflows with dark fruit: blackberry jam, baked plum, candied cherries, underlined by vanilla and roasted aromas. On the palate, opulent and full-bodied, with soft tannins and a clearly noticeable sweetness that balances the high alcohol. A wine that divides opinion – for some the epitome of Apulian fruit richness, for others a style beyond balance. Those seeking ultimate opulence will find it here.
