The Vagabond Grenache comes from three unique terroirs in the famous Blewitt Springs subregion and has a beautifully complex, aromatic nose of violets, wild cherries, rosemary, and spicy notes.
The palate is lively yet elegant and smooth, with vibrant cherry, spice, wild strawberry, and licorice notes. Complex and textured, it delights with a very long, aromatic finish. The grapes were hand-harvested, with 68% wild fermented in a concrete pyramid layered with whole clusters and crushed grapes. This fermentation was carried out without mechanical extraction.
The remainder was wild fermented in an open fermentation vessel with 35% whole clusters and punched down by hand twice daily. This portion was aged in puncheons (approx. 318 L barrels), while the wine fermented in the pyramid was pressed into a concrete egg and oak puncheons to mature.

Thistledown
"Every wine tells a tale" is the guiding principle of Giles Cooke and Fergal Tynan. The two Masters of Wine share the vision of a more elegant, structured interpretation of Australian wine. With access to many of the best vineyards and Giles's experience in winemaking, Thistledown initially championed the old Grenache vineyards of South Australia and quickly earned a reputation as one of the best in the country in this category. Giles and Fergal met on the evening before the start of the Master of Wine course in 1998 in a bar. Both shared the frustration at the time that Australian wine was considered heavy, alcoholic, and unsuitable for premium restaurants in many markets. Both knew this did not have to be the case and set out to create wines full of elegance, detail, and balance.
